Bidston Hill Observatory
Bidston Hill Observatory. Postcard of the observatory erected in 1866 at Bidston Hill, on the Wirral Peninsula, near Birkenhead, UK. It was built from sandstone and one of its main functions was to provide a precise daily time measurement and weather forecasts. Such time measurements were usually provided in the form of the dropping of a time ball, but as the observatory was several kilometres from the Port of Liverpool, whose maritime interests it served, the time of 1 o clock was marked daily with the firing of a cannon. In the background (left) is the Bidston Lighthouse, built in 1873 and in use until 1913

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historic Bidston Hill Observatory, located on the picturesque Wirral Peninsula near Birkenhead in the UK. Erected in 1866, this magnificent sandstone structure served multiple purposes, including providing precise daily time measurements and weather forecasts. While most observatories marked time with a dropping time ball, Bidston Hill Observatory was situated several kilometers away from the Port of Liverpool. Therefore, every day at 1 o'clock sharp, its maritime significance was honored by firing a cannon. In the background of this enchanting image stands the Bidston Lighthouse, constructed in 1873 and operational until 1913. Together with the observatory, these structures formed an integral part of Merseyside's coastal landscape. The artwork beautifully captures both historical and astronomical elements surrounding this iconic landmark. The domes housing telescopes add to its allure while showcasing its importance in astrophysics research during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. As you gaze upon this postcard-like scene printed by Science Photo Library, let your imagination transport you back to a bygone era when meteorological predictions were made within these walls. This photograph is not just an illustration; it represents a significant piece of English history that continues to intrigue visitors even today.
