EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases Bengt Stromgren, a renowned Danish astrophysicist who made significant contributions to the field of astronomy. Born in 1908, Stromgren dedicated his life to studying the chemical composition of stars and revolutionized photometric techniques. At just 21 years old, he earned his doctorate from the University of Copenhagen in 1929. During World War II, Stromgren resided in German-occupied Denmark before relocating to the United States in 1951. He served as director of both the Yerkes Observatory and McDonald Observatory while also holding a professorship at Princeton's Institute for Advanced Study starting from 1957. In recognition of his exceptional work, Stromgren was awarded the prestigious Gold Medal by the Royal Astronomical Society in 1962. This portrait photograph captures him during his time at Yerkes Observatory in Wisconsin back in 1957 when he was around forty-nine years old. The image portrays a distinguished man with an intense gaze directed towards the camera. It offers a glimpse into not only Bengt Stromgren's remarkable scientific achievements but also his role as an influential figure within astronomical research during the mid-20th century. This historical snapshot is part of Science Photo Library's extensive collection curated by LIBRARY OF CONGRESS/SCIENCE PHOTO LIBRARY and serves as a testament to Stromgren's lasting impact on astrophysics and theoretical astronomy.
