Ammonite fossil. Fossilized shell of an ammonite of an unidentified species
Ammonite fossil. Fossilized shell of an ammonite of an unidentified species. The fossil has been sectioned (cut in half) and polished. Ammonites are extinct cephalopods that lived between 380 and 65 million years ago. They are distantly related to the modern-day nautilus and lived in coastal waters and inland seas. Different species of ammonite existed during different geological periods. Their remains can be used for the accurate dating of marine rocks. Ammonites are therefore known as zone fossils
