1830 The Entomologist caracature G Spratt

" The Entomologist". Rare copper print with original hand colouring, drawn by George Spratt, printed by George Madely, and sold individually as part of a series through Charles Tilts Fleet Street print shop. George Spratt (1784-c.1840) was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons but also an artist. He illustrated the two volume " Flora Medica" (1829). The entomologist is here made-up of the objects of his own fascination. A Garden tiger moth makes up his body, caterpillars his arms, his hat and hair a grasshopper, beetle and damselfly. He carries a tong net to catch a blue butterfly. A small snapping net typical of the time

EDITORS COMMENTS
This rare copper print from 1830, titled "The Entomologist" is a captivating piece of art that showcases the unique talent and fascination of George Spratt. Spratt, not only a member of the Royal College of Surgeons but also an artist, skillfully combines his knowledge of entomology with his artistic abilities in this stunning illustration. In this caricature, Spratt himself becomes the subject as he is transformed into an entomologist composed entirely of insects. A Garden tiger moth forms his body while caterpillars serve as his arms. His hat and hair are cleverly crafted using a grasshopper, beetle, and damselfly. Equipped with a tong net to catch butterflies and a small snapping net commonly used during that time period, Spratt embodies both scientist and artist. Printed by George Madely and sold through Charles Tilts Fleet Street print shop as part of a series, this artwork represents the intricate craftsmanship prevalent during the era. The original hand coloring adds depth and vibrancy to each element within the composition. "The Entomologist" serves as a testament to Spratt's passion for both science and art. It invites viewers to appreciate nature's beauty through an imaginative lens while highlighting the interconnectedness between humans and insects. This piece continues to captivate audiences today with its intricate details and whimsical portrayal of one man's devotion to understanding the world around him.
