1736 Edmond Halley astronomer & physicist 1736 Edmond Halley astronomer & physicist

Edmond Halley astronomer and physicist (8 November 1656 - 14 January 1742). 1832 Engraving by W.D. Fry in the " Gallery of Portraits" after the painting by Dahl 1736 at age 80 with later colouring. Halley published the first accurate catalogue of stars in the southern hemisphere in 1678, but is most famous for his deductions on comet periodicity. Halley recognised that the orbit of the comet he observed in 1682 was similar to the comets sighted in 1531 and 1607. He proposed that they were the same, and predicted its return in 1758. When it did, the comet was named after him. He served as Astronomer Royal, and was a Fellow of the Royal Society. His atheism prevented him becoming Savilian Professor of Astronomy in Oxford. Other achievements include the first diving bell, constructing mortality tables seen as a milestone in demography, and dating Stonehenge using scientific method

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned astronomer and physicist, Edmond Halley, captured in an 1832 engraving by W. D. Fry. At the age of 80, this portrait beautifully depicts Halley with later coloring added to enhance its allure. Edmond Halley's contributions to science were profound and far-reaching. In 1678, he published the first accurate catalogue of stars in the southern hemisphere, a remarkable achievement that laid the foundation for future astronomical discoveries. However, it was his deductions on comet periodicity that truly solidified his place in history. Recognizing similarities between comets sighted in 1531 and 1607 with one he observed in 1682, Halley proposed that they were indeed the same celestial body. His prediction of its return in 1758 proved astonishingly accurate when the comet did reappear as anticipated – forever immortalizing him as its namesake. Beyond his astronomical endeavors, Halley served as Astronomer Royal and was esteemed as a Fellow of the Royal Society. Despite his numerous achievements, his atheism prevented him from assuming the prestigious position of Savilian Professor of Astronomy at Oxford University. Halley's brilliance extended beyond astronomy; he also invented the first diving bell and utilized scientific methods to date Stonehenge – showcasing his multidisciplinary prowess. This extraordinary image encapsulates not only Edmond Halley's significant contributions but also highlights key aspects such as scientific archaeology and demography through Stonehenge dating techniques and mortality tables construction respectively - testament to this English scientist's enduring legacy.
