1731 Johann Scheuchzer planet orbit C008 / 8008
1731 Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics) by Johann Scheuchzer (1672-1733) folio copper engraving drawn by a team of engravers under the direction of Johann Andreas Pfeffel (1674-1748). The orbits of the planets Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter (and its moons) and Saturn (plus its moons) are drawn as non-concentric circles around the sun. The goal of Scheuchzers work was to use the best contemporary science to illuminate the biblical account of human history in a sequence of 745 plates. At the time there was little doubt that science (physica) supported the literal truth of the Biblical chronology of creation and history. The frame is a sample of a larger picture

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate and meticulously detailed 1731 Johann Scheuchzer planet orbit C008 / 8008 engraving from his renowned work, Physica Sacra (Sacred Physics). Crafted by a team of skilled engravers under the guidance of Johann Andreas Pfeffel, this folio copper engraving depicts the orbits of various celestial bodies around the sun. The non-concentric circles elegantly trace the paths of Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter with its moons, and Saturn with its own set of moons. Scheuchzer's ultimate objective was to employ contemporary scientific knowledge to shed light on biblical narratives through a sequence of remarkable 745 plates. During that era, there existed little doubt regarding science's endorsement of the literal truth behind Biblical chronology and creation history. The frame surrounding this exquisite artwork offers us a glimpse into a larger picture filled with fascinating elements such as Venus, astronomy, motion, illustration techniques prevalent in the 18th century. It also touches upon significant themes like religion and science intertwining harmoniously or conflictingly. Furthermore, it alludes to influential figures like Galileo and Kepler who contributed immensely to our understanding of celestial mechanics. With references to zodiac signs, solar system dynamics including heliocentricity and planetary motions alongside constellations and stars; this piece serves as an extraordinary visual representation merging artistry with scientific exploration. Its historical significance lies in bridging two seemingly disparate realms - science and religion - within one comprehensive masterpiece called
