EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the picturesque Kenwyn Church in Truro, Cornwall, circa 1925. The focal point of this image is the magnificent church tower and lychgate, beautifully captured by Major Arthur William Gill, a renowned Cornishman and amateur photographer of his time. Major Gill's talent for photography was widely recognized throughout Cornwall and beyond during the 1920s and 1930s. He frequently presented his stills and cine films to various esteemed groups such as The Royal Institution of Cornwall, Royal Cornwall Polytechnic Society, and the London Cornish Society. Using his ordinary camera with great skill, Major Gill took an abundance of quarter plate slides that now serve as precious glimpses into history. What sets some of these slides apart is that they were meticulously hand-painted by Major Gill himself, adding a unique touch to each image. The result is a stunning visual representation that transports viewers back in time to experience the charm and grandeur of Kenwyn Church in all its glory. This particular photograph not only captures architectural beauty but also reflects Major Gill's passion for preserving moments through his artistry. Displayed at the Royal Cornwall Museum today, this print serves as a testament to Major Arthur William Gill's legacy as both an accomplished photographer and dedicated promoter of Cornish culture.
