The King of Prussia Inn, Fowey, Cornwall. Pre 1886
A view of The King of Prussia Inn before its rebuilding in 1886. At this time it had two floors, a third being added on demolition and rebuild. The Inn is thought to have been named after the smuggler and privateer John Carter, nicknamed " The King of Prussia Cove", who is thought to have lived here in the 1780s. Fowey Town Hall is to the left of the Inn and Fowey Parish Church, St Fimbarrus, is in the background. Photographer: Unknown

The King of Prussia Inn - A Glimpse into Cornwall's Rich History
EDITORS COMMENTS
. Step back in time with this print capturing The King of Prussia Inn, Fowey, Cornwall before its reconstruction in 1886. This charming inn, nestled amidst the picturesque coastal town, holds a fascinating tale within its walls. Legend has it that the inn derived its name from the infamous John Carter, known as "The King of Prussia Cove". It is believed that Carter, a notorious smuggler and privateer who operated along these treacherous shores during the 1780s, once called this very place home. In this snapshot frozen in time, we see the original two-story structure of The King of Prussia Inn. To our left stands Fowey Town Hall while St Fimbarrus Parish Church graces the background. The scene is bustling with activity - pedestrians strolling along the road and pavement; men and women going about their daily routines; a horse-drawn cart making its way through. Every detail tells a story - from the hanging sign proudly displaying its regal name to the vintage lamp post and bollard standing guard nearby. It's as if you can almost hear echoes of laughter and clinking glasses emanating from within those historic walls. This remarkable photograph offers us an enchanting glimpse into Cornwall's past - a testament to both architectural heritage and vibrant community life. Let it transport you to an era long gone but forever etched in our collective memory
