Women employee in the Road Motor Department at Slough, 1944

The Road Motor Department at Slough was another area that saw the employment of women in traditionally male roles. This photograph was taken on April 18th 1944 and shows a female mechanic involved in the maintenance of the GWRs fleet of road vehicles. Supply difficulties and the shortage of trained staff made the maintenance of the road vehicles increasingly challenging, but with the railways being the biggest operators of road vehicles, it was vitally important that road services remained fully operational. With typical GWR resourcefulness, damaged and worn parts were repaired, and when component parts were not available from specialist firms, replacements were fabricated in the Companys own workshops

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print from the STEAM Museum of the GWR takes us back to April 18th, 1944, capturing a significant moment in history. In an era where women were breaking barriers and stepping into traditionally male-dominated roles, this image showcases the remarkable contributions of women employees in the Road Motor Department at Slough during World War II. Amidst supply difficulties and a shortage of trained staff, these resilient women mechanics played a pivotal role in maintaining the Great Western Railway's fleet of road vehicles. With their expertise and resourcefulness, they ensured that road services remained fully operational despite challenging circumstances. The photograph portrays one such female mechanic engrossed in her work, demonstrating her skill and dedication to keeping the wheels turning. The scarcity of replacement parts did not deter them; instead, they repaired damaged or worn components with ingenuity. When specialist firms couldn't provide necessary parts, these trailblazing women fabricated replacements within their own workshops. Their unwavering commitment to service exemplifies their vital contribution to supporting transportation infrastructure during wartime. This image serves as a testament to their resilience and determination amidst adversity. As we reflect on this powerful snapshot from history, let us celebrate these unsung heroes who shattered gender norms and proved that no task was beyond their capabilities. Their legacy continues to inspire future generations as we recognize the invaluable role played by women throughout our shared history.
