Dogs Sledging

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photo print, titled "Portrait of a dog" captures the essence of adventure and resilience amidst the harsh Antarctic landscape. Taken by renowned photographer James Francis Hurley during the Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition led by Ernest Shackleton in 1914, this image offers a glimpse into the extraordinary lives of sledging dogs. In this particular portrait, we see a majestic dog adorned with a sturdy leather collar – an integral part of its sledging harness. The dog's piercing eyes reflect both determination and loyalty, embodying the spirit of these remarkable animals who played an indispensable role in polar exploration. The backdrop reveals vast icy plains stretching as far as the eye can see, reminding us of the unforgiving nature of Antarctica. This frozen wilderness served as both challenge and inspiration for Shackleton and his team during their ambitious expedition to cross the continent. As we gaze upon this photograph from University of Cambridge's Scott Polar Research Institute collection, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the bond between humans and animals that enabled such daring feats. These dogs were not mere companions; they were essential partners in navigating treacherous terrains where human strength alone would falter. Beyond its historical significance, this image serves as a testament to humanity's unyielding curiosity and desire to push boundaries. It reminds us that even amidst inhospitable conditions, there is beauty to be found – whether it be in capturing moments like these or uncovering new knowledge about our planet's most remote regions. Through this photograph, SPRI invites us on an unforgettable journey into Antarctica's past – one filled with courage, camaraderie, and awe-inspiring landscapes that continue to captivate our imagination today.
