View of the Greenwich Observatory, London, England

Greenwich Observatory buildings. View of the Greenwich Observatory buildings, London, England. The observatory was founded in 1675 by Charles II who appointed an Astronomer Royal to run it. It was the Astronomer Royals job to keep accurate tables of the positions of the Moon and stars for use in navigation by English ships. In 1811, John Pond was Astronomer Royal at Greenwich. He introduced the worlds first public time signal, the dropping of the Greenwich time ball (not seen here) at 1pm every day. Greenwich was the site of the Royal Observatory until the end of World War II

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the iconic view of the Greenwich Observatory buildings in London, England. Established in 1675 by Charles II, this historic observatory played a crucial role in maritime navigation. The Astronomer Royal, appointed by the king, was responsible for meticulously recording the positions of celestial bodies such as the Moon and stars to aid English ships' navigation. In 1811, under John Pond's leadership as Astronomer Royal at Greenwich, an extraordinary innovation took place. He introduced the world's first public time signal - a daily event that became synonymous with precision and reliability. At precisely 1pm each day (though not visible in this image), the renowned Greenwich time ball would drop, allowing people across London to synchronize their watches accurately. Greenwich served as home to the Royal Observatory until World War II drew to a close. Its historical significance cannot be overstated; it stands as a testament to centuries of astronomical exploration and scientific advancement. This remarkable photograph from Science Photo Library transports us back through time, inviting us to appreciate both its architectural beauty and its profound contribution to our understanding of space and time. It serves as a reminder of humanity's ceaseless quest for knowledge and our enduring fascination with the wonders of our universe.
