Stellate leaf hairs

False colour scanning electron micrograph of stellate leaf hairs on the surface of the hoary mullein Verbascum pulverulentum. This is a perennial herbaceous wild plant, which grows in France. Germany & England. The stellate leaf hairs are typical of alpine plants exposed to strong light & drying winds. They serve a biological function for the leaf by limiting transpiration & reducing surface temperature. The density of the hairs lends the leaf a white appearance. It is held that the hairs were scrapped from the leaves, rolled like cotton & used as wicks in the lamps of the neolithic flint miners at Grimes Graves, Norfolk. Magnification: X 37 at 35mm size. Original is BW print B745/079

Wick Alpine Plant

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of stellate leaf hairs found on the surface of the hoary mullein, a perennial herbaceous wild plant that thrives in France, Germany, and England. These unique leaf hairs are commonly seen in alpine plants that endure intense sunlight and drying winds. However, they play a vital biological role for the leaves by limiting transpiration and reducing surface temperature. The density of these delicate hairs gives the leaf a striking white appearance. Interestingly, it is believed that ancient neolithic flint miners at Grimes Graves in Norfolk utilized these very same hairs as wicks for their lamps. The hypothesis suggests that these remarkable structures were carefully scraped from the leaves, rolled like cotton, and used to provide illumination deep within the mines. Captured under scanning electron microscopy at 37 times magnification (35mm size), this false-color image reveals every intricate detail of these stellate leaf hairs. The original black-and-white print B745/079 perfectly highlights their fascinating structure. This mesmerizing photograph not only celebrates nature's ingenuity but also offers a glimpse into how even seemingly insignificant elements can have practical applications throughout history.
