Sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus), light micrograph

Sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus), light micrograph. This wingless, blood-sucking fly is an ectoparasite of sheep. The hooks on the ends of its legs help it to attach to its host. Adults feed several times a day and large infestations can cause anaemia. The sheep ked is spread by close contact between sheep. Treatment with sheep dip should successfully remove all keds

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of a sheep ked, an ectoparasite that infests sheep. The light micrograph reveals the wingless fly in all its glory, highlighting its blood-sucking nature and unique anatomy. With hooks on the ends of its legs, this tiny creature firmly attaches itself to its host for survival. The image serves as a reminder of the delicate balance between nature and animals. While these keds may seem insignificant individually, large infestations can lead to severe consequences such as anaemia in sheep. Close contact between these animals facilitates the spread of this parasitic insect. The scientific significance of this photograph lies in shedding light on entomology and zoology studies. Researchers studying biology and invertebrates can delve into understanding how parasites like these interact with their hosts at a microscopic level. In terms of wildlife photography, this mesmerizing shot captures not only the beauty but also the complexity found within our natural world. It invites viewers to appreciate even the smallest creatures that play crucial roles within ecosystems. Science Photo Library has once again provided us with an awe-inspiring glimpse into nature's wonders through their exceptional collection of images capturing various aspects of life on Earth.
