SEM of an earwig

Earwig. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of an earwig (Forficula auricularia) on leaf litter. Earwigs are predatory nocturnal insects which generally hide under stones and in crevices during the day. The superstition that earwigs seek out human ears and bite through the eardrum has no basis in fact. The earwigs head, with its long antennae, is at lower left. It has a pair of short wings (centre), but earwigs very rarely fly. Earwigs are omnivorous, and will eat flowers as well as other insects and carrion. The pincers (upper right) are used largely for defence purposes, and are raised over the head when attacked. Magnification: x5 at 5x7cm size. x12 at 5.5x7ins

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of an earwig, captured through a coloured scanning electron microscope (SEM). The image reveals the mysterious world of these predatory nocturnal insects that often seek refuge under stones and in crevices during daylight hours. Contrary to popular belief, the superstition that earwigs target human ears and cause harm is entirely unfounded. In this SEM, we see the head of the earwig positioned at the lower left corner, adorned with its long antennae which aid in sensory perception. Although equipped with a pair of short wings at its center, it is uncommon for earwigs to take flight. Omnivorous by nature, they indulge in a varied diet consisting not only of other insects but also flowers and carrion. The upper right section captures our attention with their distinct pincers - formidable weapons primarily utilized for self-defense purposes. When threatened or attacked, these pincers are raised protectively over their heads. With a magnification level of x5 at 5x7cm size or x12 at 5.5x7ins size, this photograph allows us to appreciate the remarkable beauty found within even some of nature's smallest creatures. It serves as a reminder that there is always more than meets the eye when exploring wildlife up close and personal.
