Section of a First Rate Ship of War. C017 / 3432

Plate from 18th century encyclopedia showing a stem to stern section of a first rate ship of the line. A ship of the line was a type of naval warship constructed from the 17th through to the mid-19th century to take part in the naval tactic known as the line of battle, in which two columns of opposing warships would manoeuvre to bring the greatest weight of broadside guns to bear. Since these engagements were almost invariably won by the heaviest ships carrying the most powerful guns, the natural progression was to build sailing vessels that were the largest and most powerful of their time

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a section of a First Rate Ship of War, taken from an 18th-century encyclopedia. The image offers a glimpse into the intricate details and grandeur of these naval behemoths that played a crucial role in historical battles. A ship of the line was specifically designed to participate in the line of battle tactic, where opposing warships would maneuver strategically to unleash their broadside guns with maximum impact. To ensure victory, shipbuilders constructed vessels that were not only colossal but also armed with the most powerful cannons available at the time. In this photograph, we can observe various elements that make up this mighty sailing vessel. From bow to stern, every inch is meticulously crafted for both function and aesthetics. The towering masts reach towards the sky as they bear witness to countless journeys across vast oceans. The deck is bustling with activity as sailors navigate through rigging and perform their duties under ever-changing weather conditions. The keel and rudder provide stability and control over these magnificent ships while navigating treacherous waters. As we delve deeper into this image, our eyes are drawn to the imposing gundeck lined with rows upon rows of cannons ready for action. These weapons symbolize power and dominance on the high seas. This stunning print serves as a testament to human ingenuity during an era when naval warfare reigned supreme. It encapsulates both the awe-inspiring beauty and formidable strength possessed by these ocean-going giants – forever etched in history as symbols of naval might.
