Saverys engine
Saverys engine. Historical artwork of the steam engine patented by Thomas Savery (1650-1717) in 1698. The Savery engine was designed to raise water by using steam power. Savery wanted to use the engine to pump water from mines, but most proved to be too deep for the machine to be effective. Also, it could not operate continuously so its pumping rate was limited. Despite this, several engines were installed to raise water on country estates. Saverys was the first steam pump to be produced and sold commercially. Published in History and progress of the steam engine, England, 1830

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the historical artwork of Savery's engine, a groundbreaking invention patented by Thomas Savery in 1698. The image takes us back to the 17th century, offering a glimpse into the progress made in engineering during this era. Savery's engine was an ingenious steam-powered device designed primarily for pumping water from mines. However, its effectiveness was limited due to the depth of most mines and its inability to operate continuously. Despite these challenges, several engines were installed on country estates to raise water. The illustration beautifully captures the intricate details of this early industrial marvel. It highlights the innovative technology behind Savery's creation while also reflecting the artistic style prevalent in that period. Published as part of "History and Progress of the Steam Engine" in England circa 1830, this print serves as a testament to human ingenuity and our relentless pursuit of scientific advancements. It reminds us how far we have come since then, laying down foundations for future developments that would revolutionize industries across the globe. Science Photo Library presents this remarkable piece as a tribute to Thomas Savery's pioneering work in steam power and his significant contribution to history.
