Riometer information board

Riometer information board at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR), Alaska, USA. A riometer is used in polar regions to study aurorae, the solar-induced electromagnetic storms of the polar ionosphere. The ionosphere is a region of the upper atmosphere that lies 50-600 kilometres above Earths surface. A riometer is an array of radio antennae. Riometer stands for Relative Ionospheric Opacity Meter using Extra-Terrestrial Electromagnetic Radiation. As the glowing displays of the aurorae (visible at night) block the passage of radio waves from space to the Earth, they will be seen as shadows on the riometer output screen. PFRR is operated by the University of Alaskas Geophysical Institute

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Riometer information board at Poker Flat Research Range (PFRR) in Alaska, USA. PFRR is an esteemed research facility operated by the University of Alaska's Geophysical Institute, dedicated to studying various atmospheric phenomena. The riometer, an array of radio antennae, plays a crucial role in investigating aurorae and solar-induced electromagnetic storms that occur in the polar ionosphere. The ionosphere, situated 50-600 kilometers above Earth's surface, is a fascinating region of the upper atmosphere. As night falls and vibrant displays of aurorae illuminate the sky, these mesmerizing lights obstruct radio waves from space to Earth. Consequently, they manifest as intriguing shadows on the riometer output screen. Visitors to PFRR are greeted by this informative signboard which sheds light on the significance of riometers in understanding our planet's climate and astrophysics. It serves as a reminder that beyond its breathtaking beauty, the aurora phenomenon holds valuable scientific insights waiting to be unraveled. This image not only captures the essence of American space exploration but also highlights humanity's continuous quest for knowledge about our universe. With its blend of astronomy and atmospheric science, it invites tourists and enthusiasts alike to delve into this field while admiring nature's awe-inspiring spectacle –the Northern Lights or Aurora Borealis– against Alaska's arctic backdrop. Science Photo Library proudly presents this remarkable photograph without any commercial intent; instead aiming to inspire curiosity about our world and encourage further exploration into these celestial wonders through their exceptional collection.
