Nomadic jellyfish

Nomadic jellyfish (Rhopilema nomadica) near the waters surface. It has a powerful sting that is painful but not fatal to humans. The nomadic jellyfish originated in the Indo-Pacific region, but migrated through the Suez canal into the Mediterranean. It is now found in plague proportions and has all but driven out the native common jellyfish. The umbrella (centre right) is a common food in the Far East, preserved in salt and softened in water before being eaten. Photographed in the eastern Mediterranean

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the mesmerizing beauty of nomadic jellyfish, Rhopilema nomadica, gracefully gliding near the water's surface. With their translucent umbrella-shaped bodies and delicate tentacles trailing behind them, these fascinating creatures are a sight to behold. Originating in the Indo-Pacific region, these nomadic jellyfish made their way into the Mediterranean through the Suez canal. Unfortunately, they have proliferated rapidly and now dominate the waters, pushing out native common jellyfish species. Their powerful sting is painful but not fatal to humans. Intriguingly, this peculiar marine species has become an integral part of Far Eastern cuisine. The umbrella portion of these jellyfish is harvested as food after being preserved in salt and softened in water before consumption. The migration of Rhopilema nomadica into new territories has had significant ecological implications. Their introduction into the Mediterranean has caused a plague-like situation for native species while also providing sustenance for those who appreciate unique culinary experiences. As we marvel at this image captured in the eastern Mediterranean by Science Photo Library, it serves as a reminder of nature's intricate web and how even seemingly alien creatures can find their place within it – both as awe-inspiring inhabitants of our oceans and unexpected sources of nourishment for different cultures around the world.
