Narwhals (Monodon monoceros), computer artwork
Narwhals (Monodon monoceros), computer artwork. These rare sea mammals are one of three whale species that spend their entire lives in the Arctic. They are usually seen in groups that consist of females with their calves, accompanied by several mature males. All males, and occasionally the females, have two teeth, the left of which grows into a long spiralled tusk (alicon), extending forward from the head. It is thought to help determine dominance amongst the males in a group and may be involved in the narwhal mating ritual. It is also thought that this tusk is the basis of the myth of the unicorn

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic narwhals, also known as Monodon monoceros, in a stunning computer artwork. These elusive sea mammals are among the few whale species that call the Arctic their home throughout their entire lives. Typically found in groups consisting of nurturing females and their adorable calves, these gatherings are often accompanied by several mature males. What sets narwhals apart is their distinctive feature - two teeth present in all males and occasionally even in females. The left tooth grows into an extraordinary spiralled tusk called an alicon, protruding gracefully from their heads. This remarkable appendage serves multiple purposes; it helps establish dominance within male groups and plays a role during the intricate narwhal mating ritual. Interestingly, this very tusk has been linked to the mythical creature we know as unicorns. In this mesmerizing illustration created by Science Photo Library, we get a glimpse into the enchanting world of these biological wonders thriving beneath Arctic waters. With its blend of legend, nature, artistry, and zoological accuracy, this image encapsulates both scientific fascination and artistic beauty. It reminds us of our planet's diverse wildlife and encourages us to appreciate the wonders that exist beyond our everyday experiences.
