The mineral talc (steatite or soapstone)

Talc. The mineral talc, also called steatite or soapstone, consists of monoclinic crystals of hydrous magnesium silicate (Mg3Si4O10(OH)2). It is very common, very soft, and usually found in metamorphic rock. In its purest form it is white and greasy to the touch. Finely crushed talc is used to make talcum powder. The mineral is also used in the paper, rubber, paint and textile industries

Mineral Specimen Type Soapstone Steatite Talc

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the exquisite beauty of talc, a mineral known for its softness and versatility. The image captures the essence of talc's purest form - a pristine white color with a smooth, greasy texture that invites touch. Its monoclinic crystals of hydrous magnesium silicate create an intricate pattern that mesmerizes the viewer. Talc, also referred to as steatite or soapstone, is a commonly found mineral in metamorphic rock formations. Beyond its aesthetic appeal, talc holds immense practical value across various industries. Finely crushed into powder form, it becomes the key ingredient in talcum powder renowned for its absorbent properties and gentle nature on the skin. However, this print focuses solely on highlighting the natural wonder of talc rather than delving into its commercial applications. Instead, it encourages us to appreciate the inherent beauty present in our surroundings and marvel at Earth's geological treasures. The Science Photo Library has masterfully captured this specimen of talc through their lens, allowing us to delve deeper into the world of minerals and gain a newfound appreciation for their significance in both scientific research and artistic expression.
