Marc Isambard Brunel, French engineer

Marc Isambard Brunel (1769-1849), French engineer. In 1793 Brunel fled France as a royalist refugee from the French Revolution. In 1799 he settled in England. He was the engineer for the first Thames Tunnel (upper left, constructed 1825 to 1843), and was knighted in 1841. On the table are some of his inventions and achievements, such as a miners safety lamp, a cotton winding machine, and a model of a lighthouse. His son was the railway and ship engineer, Isambard Kingdom Brunel. This 1846 mezzotint engraving by English artist J. Carter is after an original painting by English artist Samuel Drummond (1766-1844)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This 19th-century mezzotint engraving captures the essence of Marc Isambard Brunel, a remarkable French engineer whose legacy continues to shape the world of technology and innovation. In this portrait, we see Brunel seated at his desk, surrounded by his numerous inventions and achievements. His piercing gaze meets the camera with confidence and determination. Having fled France during the tumultuous years of the French Revolution, Brunel found solace in England where he would leave an indelible mark on engineering history. Notably, he served as the mastermind behind the construction of the first Thames Tunnel, a monumental feat that spanned from 1825 to 1843. As we explore this image further, our eyes are drawn to some of Brunel's notable creations showcased on his table. A miners safety lamp stands proudly alongside a cotton winding machine while a meticulously crafted model lighthouse adds an air of elegance to this scene. It is impossible not to mention that Marc Isambard Brunel was also father to another engineering genius - Isambard Kingdom Brunel - who would follow in his footsteps and revolutionize railway and ship design. Through this exquisite artwork by J. Carter after Samuel Drummond's original painting, we are transported back in time to witness firsthand the brilliance and ingenuity that defined Marc Isambard Brunel's career. This print serves as a testament not only to one man's accomplishments but also as a reminder of how visionaries can shape our world for generations to come.
