Part of manuscript written by Evariste Galois

Part of a manuscript written by the French mathematician Evariste Galois (1811-1832). Galois worked on the problem of finding general solutions for equations of degree n (ie containing terms of the form x raised to the power n, where n is an integer). Galois showed that each equation has an associated group (the Galois term) of substitutions, and that this group determines the solvability of the equation. This work formed the foundations of the branch of mathematics known as group theory

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a remarkable part of a manuscript written by the brilliant French mathematician, Evariste Galois (1811-1832). Galois dedicated his efforts to unraveling the mysteries surrounding equations of degree n, which encompass terms like x raised to the power n, where n represents an integer. His groundbreaking work led him to discover that each equation possesses an associated group known as the Galois term. Astonishingly, this very group determines whether or not an equation can be solved. Galois's profound insights laid down the foundations for what is now recognized as one of mathematics' most significant branches – group theory. This discipline explores the intricate relationships and properties within groups, ultimately shedding light on various mathematical phenomena. Within this historical artifact lies a testament to Galois's genius and his invaluable contributions to our understanding of algebraic structures. It serves as a powerful reminder that even in his tragically short life, he managed to revolutionize mathematics with his unparalleled intellect. As we gaze upon this mesmerizing piece of history captured by Science Photo Library, we are reminded of how individuals like Evariste Galois have shaped our world through their unwavering dedication and relentless pursuit of knowledge in their respective fields.
