LM of the surface of an elder leaf

Light micrograph of the surface of a leaf of the elder tree, Sambucus nigra. The small oval structures scattered over the surface are stomata (pores), which provide the plant with a means of gaseous exchange between the atmosphere & the internal tissues. The pores are held open during the day & are closed at night to conserve water. Surrounding each stoma are two curved lip-like guard cells which control the opening & closing of the pore. Magnification: x200 at 35mm size

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate details of an elder leaf's surface, as captured through a light micrograph. The image reveals numerous small oval structures scattered across the leaf, known as stomata or pores. These stomata play a vital role in facilitating gaseous exchange between the atmosphere and the plant's internal tissues. During daylight hours, these pores remain open to allow for efficient gas exchange while also enabling photosynthesis. However, when night falls, they close up to conserve precious water resources within the plant. Surrounding each stoma are two remarkable curved lip-like guard cells that act as gatekeepers, controlling the opening and closing of these tiny openings. Their ability to regulate pore size ensures optimal balance between gas exchange and water conservation. The magnification level used for this image is x200 at 35mm size, allowing us to appreciate the intricate beauty hidden within nature's creations. This photograph not only highlights botanical marvels but also serves as a reminder of how plants have evolved ingenious mechanisms to adapt and survive in their environments. Captured by Science Photo Library with expertise in nature photography and botany, this print offers a glimpse into the fascinating world of leaves' microscopic features – an awe-inspiring testament to Earth's biodiversity.
