Gyroscope spinning on a piece of string
Gyroscope. Toy gyroscope spinning on a piece of string. A gyroscope is a heavy spinning disc mounted so that its axis is free to adopt any orientation. Its special properties depend on the principle of conservation of angular momentum. The fact that it will stay upright as long as it is spinning fast enough demonstrates the property of gyroscopic inertia, that is that the direction of the spin axis resists change. Gyroscopes are used in stabilisation devices and compasses in boats and aircraft

31"x27" (79x69cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 24x20 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 31x27 inches (787x685mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a mesmerizing gyroscope spinning effortlessly on a piece of string. The toy gyroscope, an instrument widely used in scientific research and experimentation, is mounted with its axis free to adopt any orientation. Its remarkable properties are rooted in the principle of conservation of angular momentum. The gyroscopic inertia displayed by this spinning disc is truly fascinating. As long as it maintains sufficient speed, the gyroscope defies gravity and remains upright, resisting any change in its spin axis. This unique characteristic makes gyroscopes invaluable for stabilizing devices and compasses in boats and aircraft. The intricate design and functionality of this scientific device are beautifully captured in this photograph by Science Photo Library. The image not only highlights the elegance of the gyroscope but also emphasizes its significance within various fields of study. Whether you appreciate the artistry behind scientific instruments or have a passion for understanding how things work, this print serves as a reminder that even seemingly simple toys can hold profound scientific principles at their core.
