Fossilised skull of a Homo erectus boy from Kenya

Homo erectus skull. View of a fossilised skull of an early human (Homo erectus). Despite being less than 12 years old, this boy was already 168 cm in height. Homo erectus, or erect man, lived between roughly 1.8-0.3 million years ago and originated in Africa. They were the first humans to leave Africa, reaching Asia and possibly southern Europe. H. erectus had prominent brow ridges and a projecting face. This skull, dated at 1.6 million years old, is part of a skeleton that was found in Nariokotome in Kenya in 1984. It is in an exhibition by Nordstar and was photographed at the Naturkundemuseum in Stuttgart, Germany

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the fossilised skull of a Homo erectus boy from Kenya. Belonging to an early human species, Homo erectus, this particular individual was less than 12 years old but already stood at an impressive height of 168 cm. The Homo erectus species existed between approximately 1.8-0.3 million years ago and originated in Africa before venturing out to Asia and potentially southern Europe, making them the first humans to leave Africa. Characterized by their prominent brow ridges and projecting face, H. erectus played a significant role in our understanding of human evolution. This specific skull, dating back 1.6 million years, is part of a larger skeleton discovered in Nariokotome, Kenya in 1984. Currently exhibited by Nordstar at the Naturkundemuseum in Stuttgart, Germany, this photograph captures the essence of paleoanthropology and offers us a glimpse into our ancient past. It serves as a reminder that these hominids were once living beings who roamed the Earth long before our time. The image not only highlights the importance of anthropology and paleontology but also emphasizes how fossils like this one contribute to our knowledge about human history and evolution. Science Photo Library has beautifully captured this relic for all enthusiasts eager to delve deeper into humanity's ancestral roots.
