Coloured SEM of iris epithelial cells of the eye

Iris epithelium. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of epithelial cells (green) lining the underside of the human iris. The upper layer of cells has been sectioned, revealing the tiny cytoplasmic melanin granules (red) which provide the iris with its pigmentation (colour). The iris is the coloured part of the eye which contracts and dilates to control the amount of light passing into the eye. Magnification unknown

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the intricate beauty of iris epithelial cells, providing a mesmerizing glimpse into the world of human vision. The coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) captures the underside of the iris, revealing a stunning array of green epithelial cells that line this vital part of our eye. Upon closer inspection, we can observe the upper layer of cells that has been delicately sectioned, exposing an enchanting sight - tiny cytoplasmic melanin granules in vibrant red hues. These granules are responsible for endowing the iris with its unique pigmentation and colouration. It is through this pigmentation that our eyes possess their individuality and charm. The iris plays a crucial role in regulating light entering our eyes by contracting or dilating accordingly. This dynamic ability allows us to adapt to varying levels of brightness and maintain optimal visual acuity in different environments. Magnified to an unknown extent, this SEM image offers us a rare opportunity to appreciate the microscopic wonders within our own bodies. It serves as a reminder not only of our incredible anatomical complexity but also highlights how even at such minuscule scales, beauty exists. Science Photo Library brings forth yet another awe-inspiring capture from nature's vast repertoire – an exquisite fusion between artistry and scientific exploration.
