Coloured engraving of a Stegosaurus dinosaur

Stegosaurus. Coloured engraving from 1881 of a man viewing a fossil Stegosaurus dinosaur skeleton. Stegosaurus (" roofed reptile" ) was a herbivore that lived about 150 million years ago during the Jurassic period. It was about 6 metres (m) long and 2.5m high at the hips; it weighed about 1.5 tonnes. The distinctive broad spines running in two rows along its back are thought to have helped control body temperature by radiating or absorbing heat. Stegosaurus defended itself with the long spikes on its tail. Stegosaurus had a tiny brain in relation to its size. The first Stegosaurus skeleton was described in 1875

Dinosaur Stegosaurus Palaeontology

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This coloured engraving from 1881 showcases a remarkable moment in history, as a man gazes upon the fossilized remains of a Stegosaurus dinosaur skeleton. The intricate details of this artwork transport us back to the Jurassic period, approximately 150 million years ago, when this herbivorous giant roamed the Earth. Measuring an impressive 6 meters in length and standing at a height of 2.5 meters at the hips, Stegosaurus was truly awe-inspiring. Weighing around 1.5 tonnes, its massive frame was adorned with distinctive broad spines running along its back in two rows—a feature believed to have regulated its body temperature by either radiating or absorbing heat. As we delve deeper into the image, our attention is drawn to the long spikes adorning its tail—an effective defense mechanism against potential threats. Surprisingly though, despite its imposing size and appearance, Stegosaurus possessed a minuscule brain relative to its colossal body. The significance of this print lies not only in capturing the magnificence of this ancient creature but also in commemorating an important milestone for paleontology—the first description of a complete Stegosaurus skeleton dating back to 1875. Through this artful depiction and meticulous attention to detail, Science Photo Library invites us on an enlightening journey through time—allowing us to marvel at both nature's wonders and humanity's tireless pursuit of knowledge about our planet's prehistoric past.
