Clear-cut forestry

Clear-cut forestry. This involves the felling of all the trees in a defined area of forest (upper centre). This contrasts with the method of only felling the largest trees in an area. The advantage of clear-cut forestry is that it allows the soil to recover faster and the forest to be replanted more rapidly. However, destruction of the original old growth forest and its replacement with a single species plantation (monoculture) results in a massive loss of biodiversity. 23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the aftermath of clear-cut forestry, showcasing the stark contrast between a once lush and diverse forest and the barren landscape that remains. Located in Cowichan Lake, Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Canada, this image serves as a powerful reminder of the environmental impact caused by such practices. The upper centre of the photograph reveals an area where all trees have been felled within a defined region. This method allows for faster soil recovery and facilitates rapid replantation efforts. However, it comes at a great cost to biodiversity as it replaces the original old growth forest with single-species plantations or monocultures. The destruction caused by clear-cut forestry is evident in this picture; what was once teeming with life now stands devoid of its natural inhabitants. The loss extends beyond just trees - countless species that relied on this ecosystem for survival are displaced or face extinction due to habitat destruction. While there may be short-term benefits to clear-cutting forests, we must consider the long-term consequences on our planet's delicate balance. As we reflect upon this image captured by Science Photo Library, let us strive for sustainable land use practices that prioritize conservation and regeneration over immediate gains. Only then can we ensure a future where both human needs and ecological diversity are harmoniously met.
