Charles Babbage, caricature C015 / 6701
Charles Babbage (1791-1871). Caricature of the English mathematician Charles Babbage. Babbage is best known for his pioneering work on programmable computers. Believing that a machine could calculate and produce numerical tables more quickly and reliably than the human computers of the time, Babbage designed the Difference Engine to compute values of polynomial functions. After this, Babbage drew plans for an Analytical Engine which could be programmed using punch cards. Neither engine was built to completion until 1991, when Londons Science Museum build a Difference Engine from Babbages plans. Despite this, Babbage was awarded the Royal Astronomical Societys Gold Medal for his Difference Engine, which would have been able to generate mathematical

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the renowned English mathematician, Charles Babbage. Known for his groundbreaking contributions to computer science, Babbage revolutionized the field with his innovative ideas on programmable computers. His belief in machines' ability to outperform human calculators led him to design the remarkable Difference Engine, which efficiently computed values of polynomial functions. Babbage's visionary mind didn't stop there; he also conceptualized plans for an Analytical Engine that could be programmed using punch cards. Although neither engine was fully realized during his lifetime, it wasn't until 1991 when London's Science Museum finally constructed a functioning Difference Engine based on Babbage's original designs. Despite not witnessing the completion of his inventions, Babbage received recognition for his brilliance. He was honored with the Royal Astronomical Society's prestigious Gold Medal for his outstanding work on the Difference Engine—a machine capable of generating complex mathematical calculations swiftly and accurately. In this comical caricature portrait captured by Gary Brown from Science Photo Library, we see a glimpse into Babbage's physical appearance—his distinguished features reflecting intelligence and determination. The artwork transports us back to the 19th century, immersing us in history as we admire this influential British figure who paved the way for modern computing technology.
