Animal magnetism, satirical artwork
Animal magnetism. Satirical artwork depicting a patient and animal magnetism practitioner with animal heads. Animal magnetism was developed by the German physician Franz Mesmer (1734-1815) in the 1770s. It involved manipulating a magnetic fluid thought to reside in living objects. The practice was later renamed mesmerism, and eventually led to the development of hypnosis. At lower left is a German copy of Ovids Metamorphoses. This 19th century artwork is from Die Karikatur und Satire in der Medizin (Caricature and Satire in Medicine, 1921) by the German art historian and physician Eugen Hollander (1867-1932)

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a satirical artwork titled "Animal Magnetism" which humorously depicts the practice developed by German physician Franz Mesmer in the 18th century. The image portrays a patient and an animal magnetism practitioner, both adorned with animal heads, symbolizing the unconventional nature of this alternative treatment. Mesmer believed that living objects contained a magnetic fluid that could be manipulated to heal various ailments. The artwork also features a German copy of Ovid's Metamorphoses at the lower left corner, highlighting the influence of classical literature on medical practices during that era. Created in the 19th century by Eugen Hollander, a renowned German art historian and physician, this piece is part of his collection called "Caricature and Satire in Medicine". Through clever caricaturization, Hollander exposes the quackery associated with mesmerism while shedding light on its transformation into hypnotism over time. This thought-provoking illustration captures not only historical aspects but also reflects upon society's fascination with unconventional healing methods. Displayed against a backdrop reminiscent of an old-fashioned bedroom setting, this artwork serves as an intriguing glimpse into the history of medicine and how it has evolved throughout centuries. With its rich symbolism and artistic brilliance, "Animal Magnetism" invites viewers to ponder upon our ever-changing understanding of health and wellness.
