Brass astrolabe from the middle ages

Astrolabe. Brass astrolabe from the middle ages. The astrolabe consists of circles marked with angular measurements. By aligning the astrolabe with the horizon, the angular heights (altitudes) and positions (azimuths) of stars in the sky could be measured. An astronomer who knew his location on the Earth could, by measuring the position of a standard star, calculate the time. Astrolabes were widely used in astronomy and astrology and were one of the most important scientific instruments of the time. Photograph of an Islamic astrolabe from the period 1350-1450. Arab scholars were at this time amongst the most scientifically-advanced people in the world

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a brass astrolabe from the Middle Ages, an extraordinary instrument that revolutionized astronomy and astrology during its time. The astrolabe is composed of intricately marked circles with angular measurements, enabling astronomers to measure the angular heights (altitudes) and positions (azimuths) of stars in the sky. By aligning this remarkable device with the horizon, ancient astronomers who possessed knowledge of their location on Earth could accurately calculate time by measuring the position of a standard star. Dating back to the period between 1350-1450, this particular Islamic astrolabe exemplifies the scientific advancements achieved by Arab scholars during that era. Widely regarded as one of history's most significant scientific instruments, astrolabes played an indispensable role in both astronomy and astrology. The round shape and rounded circular design elements make this historical artifact visually striking. Its rich history traces back to medieval times when it served as a vital tool for understanding celestial phenomena. This awe-inspiring photograph not only captures the beauty and craftsmanship behind this brass astrolabe but also pays tribute to Arab scholars' immense contributions towards advancing scientific knowledge centuries ago. It serves as a reminder of humanity's enduring curiosity about our place in the universe and our relentless pursuit to unravel its mysteries through exploration and innovation.
