Bee on finger
Bee on finger. Numbered queen honeybee (Apis mellifera) resting on the tip of a researchers finger. The bee has been labelled so that it can be recognised during experiments investigating honeybee behaviour, such as their communication and navigation. The queen produces all of the worker and drone bees for a colony. Honeybees are economically important as pollinators of many of the worlds crops. Photographed at the University of Wurzburg, Germany

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a remarkable moment of scientific exploration and discovery. Here, we see a numbered queen honeybee delicately perched on the tip of a researcher's finger at the University of Wurzburg in Germany. The bee has been carefully labeled to facilitate experiments that delve into the intricate behavior of honeybees, including their communication and navigation abilities. As the sole producer of worker and drone bees within her colony, this queen holds immense significance in the world of apiculture. Honeybees play a vital role as pollinators for numerous crops worldwide, making them economically indispensable. The image showcases not only the beauty but also the importance of these social insects in our ecosystem. Through meticulous marking techniques employed by researchers, such as labeling and numbering, scientists can track individual bees during various biological experiments conducted in laboratories. Taken in 2003 by Science Photo Library at Wurzburg University, this photograph exemplifies how science intertwines with nature to unravel its mysteries. It serves as a powerful reminder that even small creatures like bees hold immense value and contribute significantly to our planet's biodiversity and food production systems.
