Australopithecus africanus jaw bone C013 / 6559

Australopithecus africanus mandible (lower jaw) from an adolescent male (of about 12 years). A. africanus was a bipedal hominid that lived between 3.5 and 2 million years ago. Studies undertaken on the teeth of the hominid suggest that it was omnivorous. It ranged throughout much of Africa. This fossil was discovered at Makapansgat, South Africa, in July 1948

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the Australopithecus africanus jaw bone C013/6559, belonging to an adolescent male estimated to be around 12 years old. The A. africanus species, which existed between 3.5 and 2 million years ago, was a significant bipedal hominid that roamed various regions of Africa. This particular fossil was discovered at Makapansgat in South Africa during July of 1948. The preserved mandible is set against a striking black background, drawing attention to its intricate details and remarkable teeth. Studies conducted on these teeth have revealed that this ancient hominid had an omnivorous diet, further enhancing our understanding of their lifestyle and adaptations. As one delves into the world of anthropology and paleontology through this image, it becomes evident how crucial fossils like these are in unraveling the mysteries surrounding early humans. The youthfulness of this specimen adds another layer of fascination as we ponder upon the lives led by our distant ancestors. Expertly captured by the Natural History Museum in London's Science Photo Library, this photograph serves as a testament to both scientific exploration and artistic appreciation for our prehistoric past. It invites us to reflect on humanity's origins while marveling at the meticulous preservation techniques employed by paleontologists throughout history.
