Artwork showing the vomiting reflex

Vomiting. Illustration of the human vomiting mechanism. An impulse from the brain (within triangle) stimulates the vomiting centre (red) in the brainstem. Nerve impulses sent to the stomach (blue organ), diaphragm and abdominal wall result in the forcible expulsion of the contents of the stomach. Vomiting can be triggered by overstimulation of or damage to the stomach, the balancing mechanism in the inner ear or the frontal lobes of the brain. Specific causes include hormonal changes during pregnancy, raised pressure in the skull caused by head injury or brain tumour, and overdrinking or eating

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This artwork, captured by Science Photo Library, delves into the intricate mechanism of the human vomiting reflex. The print showcases a detailed illustration that highlights the various components involved in this involuntary bodily response. At its core, this masterpiece depicts how an impulse originating from the brain stimulates the vomiting center within the brainstem. As nerve impulses are sent to different parts of our body - including the stomach, diaphragm, and abdominal wall - they result in a forceful expulsion of stomach contents. The artist skillfully portrays these interconnected elements with vibrant colors and precise details. The red hue elegantly represents the location of the vomiting center in our brainstem while emphasizing its crucial role in triggering this reflexive action. Moreover, through shades of blue, we witness how nerves extend towards and interact with our stomach – symbolizing their involvement in coordinating this complex process. This visual representation serves as a reminder that overstimulation or damage to any part along this pathway can lead to nausea and subsequent vomiting. From hormonal changes during pregnancy to head injuries or even excessive consumption of food or drink – numerous factors can activate this intricate mechanism. By shedding light on such physiological intricacies, this artwork invites us to appreciate both the fragility and resilience inherent within our nervous system. In summary, Science Photo Library's stunning print provides viewers with an awe-inspiring glimpse into one aspect of human anatomy: showcasing not only its complexity but also highlighting potential triggers for nausea-induced expulsion.
