Shadows of Turkish soldiers are seen on a wall as they wait for the start of a ceremony at the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk during the 70th anniversary of his death in Ankara November 10, 2008. A new film that portrays Turkeys revered founder Ataturk as a lonely, hard-drinking man beset by doubts has whipped up emotions in a country still grappling with his legacy 70 years after his death. Ataturk, a former soldier, founded modern Turkey as a secularist republic from the ashes of the Ottoman Empire. REUTERS/Umit Bektas (TURKEY) - GF2E4BA152D01

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this poignant print captured by Umit Bektas, the shadows of Turkish soldiers are seen cast upon a wall as they patiently await the start of a ceremony at the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. The solemn occasion marks the 70th anniversary of his passing in Ankara on November 10,2008. This image encapsulates both reverence and contemplation as it offers a glimpse into Turkey's ongoing struggle to grapple with Ataturk's enduring legacy. As the founder of modern Turkey, Ataturk is revered for his role in establishing a secularist republic from the remnants of the Ottoman Empire. However, this new film portrayal challenges conventional narratives surrounding him. The photograph captures an atmosphere shrouded in uncertainty and introspection. The soldiers' elongated shadows symbolize not only their physical presence but also serve as metaphors for doubts that plagued Ataturk during his life. It humanizes him beyond his iconic status, depicting him as a lonely figure burdened by personal struggles. Turkey remains deeply connected to its past while simultaneously navigating its future trajectory. This image serves as a reminder that even historical figures like Ataturk are subject to reinterpretation and reevaluation over time. Umit Bektas skillfully captures this momentous event through his lens, providing viewers with an evocative snapshot that invites reflection on history, identity, and collective memory within Turkish society.
