A hooded penitent wears an improvised crown made of plastic flowers during Maundy
A hooded penitent wears an improvised crown made of plastic flowers during Maundy Thursday Lenten rites in Angeles city, Pampanga province, north of Manila April 1, 2010. The Roman Catholic church frowns on the gory spectacle held in the Philippine villages every Maundy Thursday or Holy Thursday but that does nothing to deter the faithful from emulating the suffering of Christ and taking a painful route to penitence. 17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we are transported to the vibrant streets of Angeles City in the Pampanga province of the Philippines. It is Maundy Thursday, a solemn day during Lenten rites, and a hooded penitent stands before us wearing an improvised crown made of plastic flowers. This unique headpiece adds a touch of color and creativity to an otherwise somber occasion. The Roman Catholic Church may disapprove of the gory spectacle that unfolds on this day, but it does not deter the faithful from emulating Christ's suffering and seeking penitence through painful routes. The devotion displayed by these individuals is awe-inspiring as they walk bare-chested, disguised under their hoods. As our gaze focuses on this particular penitent, we notice intricate details in his attire and surroundings. The close-up shot allows us to appreciate the craftsmanship behind his flower crown and observe its artificial blooms up close. The depth of field blurs out other participants in the procession, highlighting his presence amidst a sea of colorful garments. This image captures both tradition and nature harmoniously intertwined. Against a backdrop of green foliage, these devoted individuals gather together as a group to embark on their journey towards spiritual enlightenment. Their determination is evident as they walk leisurely along their chosen path despite any physical discomfort or pain they may endure. Erik de Castro's photograph encapsulates the essence of this traditional festival while inviting viewers into an environment where faith takes center stage amid bursts of vivid colors provided by plastic flowers – symbols
