Rhuddlan Castle, LMS poster, 1929

Poster produced for London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Rhuddlan Castle, Denbighshirre, Wales. The castle was built in the 11th century and changed hands between Wales and England several times, but with the establishment of English rule in Wales it finally passed into the keeping of the Crown. It was ravaged by Parliamentarians in 1643. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson, who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) and Southern Railway (SR) and organised the Royal Academy series of posters for the LMR in 1924. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 635 mm

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases the majestic Rhuddlan Castle, located in Denbighshire, Wales. The poster was created in 1929 by Norman Wilkinson for the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to this historic site. Rhuddlan Castle has a rich and tumultuous history dating back to the 11th century. It witnessed numerous conflicts between Wales and England before ultimately falling under English rule. However, its fate took a tragic turn during the English Civil War when it was ravaged by Parliamentarians in 1643. Norman Wilkinson, renowned for his marine paintings, crafted this stunning artwork that captures the essence of Rhuddlan Castle's grandeur and historical significance. His artistic skills were honed at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. Measuring an impressive 1016 mm x 635 mm, this poster is a testament to LMS's dedication to promoting railway travel across Britain. It is part of a series designed by Wilkinson for various railway companies such as London & North Western Railway (LNWR), London & Midlands Railway (LMR), and Southern Railway (SR). Additionally, he organized the Royal Academy series of posters for LMR in 1924. The National Railway Museum proudly presents this print from their Pictorial Collection as a tribute to both British heritage and exceptional artistry captured within one frame.
