Framed Photos from National Railway Museum

Fettes College, LMS poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced for London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Edinburgh. Artwork by Norman Wilkinson, who studied art at Portsmouth and Southsea Schools of Art. A famous marine painter, he designed posters for the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) and Southern Railway (SR) and organised the Royal Academy series of posters for the London & Midlands Railway (LMR) in 1924

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print showcases a vintage poster created by the London, Midland & Scottish Railway (LMS) to promote rail travel to Edinburgh. The artwork, skillfully crafted by renowned marine painter Norman Wilkinson, captures the essence of this historic city and its allure. Wilkinson's artistic talent shines through in this masterpiece as he expertly combines vibrant colors and intricate details to bring Edinburgh to life on paper. The poster serves as an invitation for travelers to embark on a journey filled with cultural richness and architectural marvels. Notably, Wilkinson's contribution extends beyond LMS; his creative prowess has graced posters for other prominent railway companies such as the London & North Western Railway (LNWR), the London & Midlands Railway (LMR), and Southern Railway (SR). His exceptional work also includes organizing the Royal Academy series of posters for LMR in 1924. Fettes College takes center stage in this particular poster, symbolizing both educational excellence and the grandeur of Scotland's capital city. As one gazes upon this remarkable piece of art, it evokes a sense of nostalgia for a bygone era when rail travel was not only practical but also an opportunity for adventure and discovery. Preserved within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print allows us to appreciate not just the beauty of Wilkinson's creation but also its historical significance in promoting social mobility through education while highlighting railways' vital role in connecting people across vast distances.
