Framed Photos from National Railway Museum

A goods train crossing the Ribblehead Viaduct, North Yorkshire, c 1950s

Steam train heading north across the Ribblehead Viaduct on the Settle to Carlisle line. Photograph by Bishop Eric Treacy. Treacy was often allowed special access to many areas denied to other railway photographers. He also befriended many of the footplate crews, occasionally persuading them to create special smoke effects for the camera

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures a mesmerizing moment in railway history as a majestic steam train traverses the iconic Ribblehead Viaduct in North Yorkshire during the 1950s. The Settle to Carlisle line, renowned for its breathtaking scenery, provides the perfect backdrop for this awe-inspiring spectacle. Renowned photographer Bishop Eric Treacy skillfully immortalized this scene, showcasing his exceptional talent and unique access to areas typically off-limits to other railway photographers. Treacy's passion for railways extended beyond capturing mere images; he formed genuine connections with footplate crews, earning their trust and occasionally coaxing them into creating extraordinary smoke effects specifically tailored for his lens. The image itself is nothing short of remarkable. The powerful locomotive steams ahead with unwavering determination, symbolizing both progress and nostalgia. Its billowing plumes blend harmoniously with the surrounding landscape, creating an ethereal atmosphere that transports viewers back in time. As we gaze upon this photograph from the National Railway Museum's collection, we are reminded of the vital role trains played in shaping our nation's infrastructure and connecting communities across vast distances.
