Framed Photos from National Railway Museum

York, LNER poster, 1931

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), issued for display in Belgium, showing Kings Manor in York, with the Minster in the background. Originally the Abbots House of St Marys Abbey, Kings Manor later became a seat of government for the Tudors and Stuarts, becoming the official residence of the President of the Council of the North in 1561. Kings Manor went on to become a school for the blind in the 1830s, and by the 1960s was part of York University. Artwork by Fred Taylor (1975-1963)

National Railway Museum is the home of iconic locomotives. Our historic prints reflect the age and quality of the original artwork we hold to preserve their artistic character, including authentic colour reproduction, marks and creases.

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the year 1931, when the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) commissioned this stunning poster for display in Belgium. The artwork, created by Fred Taylor, showcases the picturesque city of York in all its glory. In this particular scene, we are treated to a magnificent view of Kings Manor with the iconic York Minster towering majestically in the background. Originally built as Abbots House for St Marys Abbey, Kings Manor underwent various transformations throughout history. It served as a seat of government for both Tudors and Stuarts before being designated as the official residence of the President of the Council of the North in 1561. The historical significance doesn't end there; during the 1830s, Kings Manor became a school for blind individuals before eventually becoming part of York University by the 1960s. This rich tapestry of heritage is beautifully captured in Taylor's artwork. As we gaze upon this print today, it serves as a reminder not only of York's architectural splendor but also its enduring legacy that has shaped generations. The intricate details and vibrant colors transport us back to an era where railway travel was celebrated through artistry and storytelling. Preserved within National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this photograph allows us to appreciate how railways have not only connected people but also immortalized cultural landmarks like Kings Manor and York Minster on an international stage.
