Havens and Harbours, LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) to promote the rail travel to the havens and harbours served by the railway. The poster shows an illustration of the harbour at Lowestoft, Suffolk, with a ship tied to a jetty and the quay in the background. Artwork by Frank Henry Mason (1876-1965), who was educated at HMS Conway and spent time at sea. He painted marine and coastal subjects and was involved in engineering and shipbuilding. In addition to LNER, he also designed railway posters for the North Eastern Railway (NER) and Great Western Railway (GWR). Dimensions: 1150mm x 665mm

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print titled "Havens and Harbours" takes us back in time to the golden era of rail travel. Produced by the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER) between 1923 and 1947, this poster aimed to entice travelers to explore the picturesque havens and harbours served by their railway network. The focal point of the artwork is an exquisite illustration of Lowestoft Harbour in Suffolk. The scene depicts a ship gracefully moored alongside a jetty, with the bustling quay stretching into the background. The attention to detail is remarkable, showcasing artist Frank Henry Mason's mastery in capturing marine and coastal subjects. Mason's artistic prowess was influenced by his education at HMS Conway and his firsthand experience at sea. His deep understanding of engineering and shipbuilding shines through in this stunning piece. Notably, Mason also lent his creative talents to designing railway posters for other prominent companies such as North Eastern Railway (NER) and Great Western Railway (GWR). Measuring an impressive 1150mm x 665mm, this print transports viewers back to an era when rail travel was not only practical but also imbued with a sense of adventure. As we gaze upon this nostalgic image, we can almost hear the sounds of seagulls overhead and feel the gentle breeze coming off the water – beckoning us towards new horizons waiting just beyond those charming havens and harbours along LNER's route.
