Scarborough, LNER poster, 1923-1947

Poster produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), showing holiday-makers on the promenade and beach at Scarborough, North Yorkshire. The old North Sea fishing port and spa town of Scarborough, which included the remains of a 12th century castle, and a Roman signal station on Castle Cliff between North Bay and South Bay, was built on a steep cliff side and became a popular seaside holiday resort. Artwork by Arthur C Michael

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print takes us back to the golden era of seaside holidays in Scarborough, North Yorkshire. Produced for the London & North Eastern Railway (LNER), this poster beautifully captures the essence of a summer getaway by showcasing holiday-makers enjoying themselves on the promenade and beach. Scarborough, once an old fishing port and spa town, transformed into a thriving coastal resort that attracted tourists from far and wide. The town's rich history is evident with its 12th-century castle ruins and a Roman signal station perched on Castle Cliff between North Bay and South Bay. The artwork by Arthur C Michael transports us to a time when families flocked to Scarborough's sandy shores seeking relaxation, fun, and adventure. The image depicts sun-kissed beaches dotted with colorful umbrellas as children build sandcastles while their parents bask in the warm sunshine. As we gaze at this nostalgic scene, we can almost hear the joyful laughter echoing through the air as holidaymakers indulge in ice creams or take leisurely strolls along the bustling promenade. This print serves as a reminder of simpler times when vacations were cherished moments spent reconnecting with loved ones amidst nature's beauty. Preserved in National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, this print not only showcases Scarborough's allure but also pays homage to LNER’s role in promoting these idyllic coastal resorts. It serves as an invitation for us to step back in time and experience firsthand why Scarborough has remained one of Britain’s most beloved seaside destinations throughout
