Waterloo Station - Peace, SR poster, 1948

Poster produced for Southern Railways (SR). This is one of two posters commissioned as part of the celebrations that took place in 1948 to mark the centenary of the opening of Waterloo Station. The poster commemorates a centenary of uninterrupted service during war and peace. Artwork by Helen McKie, who studied at the Lambeth School of Art and exhibited at the Paris Salon and at leading London galleries. In addition to designing posters for the Southern Railway (SR), she also wrote and illustrated booklets and other publicity material and designed uniforms and upholstery. In 1939 she was asked to decorate two new coaches for the cross-Channel service. Dimensions: 1016 mm x 1270mm

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This print captures the essence of Waterloo Station in 1948, a significant year for Southern Railways (SR) as they celebrated the centenary of this iconic transportation hub. The poster, commissioned to commemorate a hundred years of uninterrupted service during both war and peace, stands as a testament to the resilience and dedication of those who served at Waterloo Station. The artwork was masterfully created by Helen McKie, an accomplished artist who studied at the prestigious Lambeth School of Art. Her talent extended beyond designing posters for SR; she also wrote and illustrated booklets, designed uniforms and upholstery, leaving her artistic mark on various aspects of railway travel. In this particular piece, McKie skillfully depicts soldiers from different eras alongside clocks that symbolize time's unyielding march forward. The juxtaposition serves as a poignant reminder of how Waterloo Station has stood witness to countless journeys made by brave men and women throughout history. Measuring 1016mm x 1270mm, this print transports viewers back in time to experience the grandeur and significance surrounding Waterloo Station's centenaries. Preserved within the National Railway Museum's Pictorial Collection, it is not only a visual delight but also an invaluable historical artifact that pays homage to the enduring legacy of one of Britain's most iconic train stations.
