Ann Summers, the shop secretary at the opening of the sex supermarket named after her
Ann Summers, the shop secretary at the opening of the sex supermarket named after her, Ann Summers, in London Marble Arch, September 1970.
The company was named after Annice Summers, the female secretary of the male founder, Michael Caborn-Waterfield.
Annice Summers, who was born Annice Goodwin in 1941 but later took her stepfathers surname, left the company soon after it opened following a row with Caborn Waterfield. She went to live in Umbria, Italy, two hours from Rome, and died of cancer in October 2012
Ann left the company not long after its launch, and as of 2019 the brand has 140 high street shops across the United Kingdom.

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph captures a momentous occasion in London's history, as Ann Summers, the shop secretary herself, stands proudly at the opening of the eponymous sex supermarket. The year is 1970, and Marble Arch serves as the backdrop for this groundbreaking event. Annice Summers, born Annice Goodwin in 1941 but later adopting her stepfather's surname, played an instrumental role in shaping this iconic brand. Named after her by founder Michael Caborn-Waterfield, Ann Summers quickly became synonymous with adult retailing. However, fate had other plans for Annice. A disagreement with Caborn-Waterfield led to her departure from the company shortly after its inception. Seeking solace abroad, she found refuge in Umbria, Italy where she resided until her untimely passing due to cancer in October 2012. Despite Ann's departure from the business world years ago, her legacy lives on through Ann Summers' continued success. As of 2019, this pioneering brand boasts an impressive presence with over 140 high street shops across the United Kingdom. Tom King expertly captured this historic moment on September 9th of that transformative year - a snapshot frozen in time that immortalizes both a remarkable woman and a revolutionary concept within consumer culture.
