Eustace Rogers builds coracles but the demand for this ancient form of transport has

Eustace Rogers builds coracles but the demand for this ancient form of transport has fallen in the past few hundred years. So 52 year old Eustace - the last of his kind in England - has switched from the very old to the very new and taken a job at the huge power station at Ironbridge in Shropshire. He commutes, of course, by coracle - three miles on the River Seven. Its ideal for reflective lunch breaks and there are no no parking problems either. March 1967

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
In this photo print, we see Eustace Rogers, the last remaining coracle builder in England, adapting to the changing times. The demand for these ancient vessels has dwindled over the past few centuries, prompting Eustace to embrace a new chapter in his life. At 52 years old, he has traded his traditional craft for a job at the colossal power station located in Ironbridge, Shropshire. To commute to work each day, Eustace relies on his trusty coracle as he gracefully navigates three miles along the serene River Seven. This unconventional mode of transportation not only connects him with his roots but also provides an idyllic setting for reflective lunch breaks amidst rippling waters. With no parking woes to contend with, Eustace's daily routine is both peaceful and efficient. Captured in March 1967 during the vibrant era of the 1960s, this image beautifully juxtaposes ancient and modern elements. As Eustace rows through the river's gentle currents wearing his flat cap and enjoying a sandwich break from work, towering chimneys from the power station loom in the background - symbols of progress and industrialization. This photograph encapsulates a moment frozen in time - one man's transition from an age-old tradition to embracing technological advancements while still cherishing moments of tranquility that can only be found on water.
