Millennium Wheel London Eye Nov 1999
Workmen check the first capsule to be put on the London Eye one of the worlds largest big wheels, which is under the final stages of construction as it stands beside the River Thames in London. Eventually there will be 32 French manufactured pods, which each weighs nine tonnes, can hold 25 people, and is fully air conditioned to ensure passengers can enjoy one of the best the view of London from the London Eye whatever the weather. Despite hitches when the first attempt to lift the wheel was delayed when a cable snapped and when protesters scaled the structure and spent the night on it, engineers still expect the wheel to be ready for the public by the New Year deadline

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

Capturing the Final Stages - Workmen Ensure a Smooth Ride on London's Iconic Millennium Wheel
EDITORS COMMENTS
. In this print from November 1999, we witness the meticulous work of dedicated engineers as they inspect the first capsule to be placed on the magnificent London Eye. Standing proudly beside the majestic River Thames, this colossal Ferris wheel is nearing completion and promises to become one of the world's largest attractions. Crafted in France, each of its 32 pods weighs an astounding nine tonnes and boasts state-of-the-art air conditioning, ensuring that all 25 passengers can relish breathtaking views of London regardless of weather conditions. As construction nears its end, these diligent workers leave no stone unturned in their quest for perfection. Despite facing challenges along the way - such as a delayed attempt due to a snapped cable and daring protesters who scaled its structure - these resilient engineers remain undeterred. With unwavering determination, they strive to meet their New Year deadline and present this marvel to eager visitors. This remarkable snapshot from Arnold Slater takes us back to an era when dreams were being realized before our very eyes. It serves as a testament not only to human ingenuity but also to collective efforts that defy obstacles encountered during monumental projects like this one. Let us cherish this memory from the late '90s when London's skyline was forever transformed by an engineering feat that continues to captivate millions today.
