John, proving that flying is no Pushover. Student John Lavery was all ready for take-off
John, proving that flying is no Pushover. Student John Lavery was all ready for take-off in his home-made, pedal-powered " aircraft" on Sunday (21-2-71). But minutes later his hopes of a £ 10, 000 aviation prize took a temporary nosedive. A gust of wind made the machine keel over - before it was even airborne. John, 19, and four fellow students are bidding for a prize offered by the Royal Aeronautical Society for the first man-powered flight over one mile. The trial run - in the Lancaster University car park-ended when the pram-wheeled undercarriage buckled as the " aircraft" veered off course. The attempt was part of the universitys Rag Week activities. Our Picture Shows; John prepares for take-off. February 1971 P001007

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame
FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
John, proving that flying is no Pushover. Student John Lavery was all ready for take-off in his home-made, pedal-powered "aircraft" on Sunday (21-2-71). But minutes later his hopes of a £10,000 aviation prize took a temporary nosedive. A gust of wind made the machine keel over - before it was even airborne. John, 19, and four fellow students are bidding for a prize offered by the Royal Aeronautical Society for the first man-powered flight over one mile. The trial run - in the Lancaster University car park - ended when the pram-wheeled undercarriage buckled as the "aircraft" veered off course. The attempt was part of the university's Rag Week activities. Despite this setback, John's determination to conquer the skies remains unshaken. With humor and resilience, he continues to pursue his dream with unwavering enthusiasm. In this print from February 1971 captured by Mirrorpix during that eventful day, we see John preparing himself for take-off. His eyes filled with excitement and anticipation as he sits inside his unique creation. This image not only showcases John's audacious spirit but also reflects the adventurous nature of university life during that era. It serves as a reminder that sometimes setbacks may occur along our journey towards success but should never deter us from reaching new heights.
