23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This stunning handcolored copperplate stipple engraving, titled "Zander, Sander Lucioperca, Jarbua Terapon," is an exquisite example of natural history illustration from the 19th century. The illustration was created by Jean Gabriel Pretre (1780-1845), a painter of natural history at Empress Josephine's zoo and later becoming the artist to the Museum of Natural History in Paris. The engraving was executed by Massard, under the direction of Turpin, and published by F.G. Levrault. The illustration features three distinct species of fish and one reptile. At the center, the Zander or European Pike-perch (Sander lucioperca) is depicted with its distinctive elongated body and sharp teeth. To the left, the Jarbua or Asiatic Sea Perch (Terapon jarbua) is shown with its vibrant colors and distinctive markings. The third fish species, Sander, is not clearly identified in the illustration, but it is believed to be a European Pike (Esox lucius) due to its similar appearance to the Zander. The reptile in the illustration is identified as Hippolyte Cloquet, but it is unclear if this is an error or if it refers to a different species. Hippolyte Cloquet was a naturalist and explorer, and it is possible that the error occurred due to his association with the natural history world during that time. The intricate details and vibrant colors of this handcolored copperplate stipple engraving provide a fascinating glimpse into the natural history illustration of the 19th century. The illustration is a testament to the skill and artistry of Jean Gabriel Pretre and the importance of natural history during this period.
