Detachment Finds Flanders Hamlet Infantry Nieuport Surrounded

23"x19" (58x48cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 16x12 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 23x19 inches (584x482mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This evocative image captures the harsh realities of the Battle of Ypres, fought during the early stages of World War I in the autumn of 1914. The photograph depicts a small German infantry detachment, surrounded by water and under heavy fire in a hamlet located to the south of Nieuport, in the western region of Flanders, Belgium. The scene is set against the backdrop of the muddy, waterlogged landscape, a result of the incessant rain and the relentless shelling that marked the intense fighting in this area. The German soldiers, huddled together for protection, are shown attempting to hold their ground against the advancing Allied forces. The hamlet, once a peaceful community, now lies in ruins, with the remnants of buildings and debris scattered about. The once tranquil waterway that runs through the village has become a deadly obstacle, isolating the German detachment from their comrades and supplies. The ominous smoke rising from the horizon underscores the intensity of the battle, as the sound of gunfire and explosions fill the air. The soldiers' expressions convey a mixture of determination, exhaustion, and fear, as they face the uncertainty of their future. The image serves as a poignant reminder of the brutal and unforgiving nature of war, and the sacrifices made by soldiers on both sides during the Great War. The Battle of Ypres, also known as the First Battle of Ypres or the Battle of the Yser, was a significant turning point in the war, as the Allied forces managed to prevent the German advance towards the English Channel and the port of Calais. The battle lasted from October 19 to November 22, 1914, and resulted in heavy casualties on both sides. This powerful photograph offers a glimpse into the events of that fateful period, providing a poignant and enduring testament to the human cost of war.
