1847 1931 Alva Edison Experiment Listening Phonogram Slumped

17"x15" (43x38cm) Premium Frame

FSC real wood frame with double mounted 10x8 print. Double mounted with white conservation mountboard. Frame moulding comprises stained composite natural wood veneers (Finger Jointed Pine) 39mm wide by 21mm thick. Archival quality Fujifilm CA photo paper mounted onto 1mm card. Overall outside dimensions are 17x15 inches (431x381mm). Rear features Framing tape to cover staples, 50mm Hanger plate, cork bumpers. Glazed with durable thick 2mm Acrylic to provide a virtually unbreakable glass-like finish. Acrylic Glass is far safer, more flexible and much lighter than typical mineral glass. Moreover, its higher translucency makes it a perfect carrier for photo prints. Acrylic allows a little more light to penetrate the surface than conventional glass and absorbs UV rays so that the image and the picture quality doesn't suffer under direct sunlight even after many years. Easily cleaned with a damp cloth. Please note that, to prevent the paper falling through the mount window and to prevent cropping of the original artwork, the visible print may be slightly smaller to allow the paper to be securely attached to the mount without any white edging showing and to match the aspect ratio of the original artwork.

EDITORS COMMENTS
This photograph, taken in 1891, captures the historic moment when Thomas Alva Edison, the brilliant American inventor, listened intently to the first phonogram sent from England to New York. The image, published in the French scientific journal La Nature in 1931, depicts Edison with a serious expression as he leans forward, his ear close to the horn of the phonograph, which rests on a cluttered table. The year was 1891, and the world was on the brink of a new era in communication and entertainment. Born in 1847, Edison was a pioneer in the field of sound recording, having invented the phonograph in 1877. However, this photograph marks a significant milestone in his career, as it represents the first time that sound recordings could be transmitted across vast distances. The phonogram, sent from England, was a testament to the global reach of Edison's invention and the potential it held for connecting people across continents. The scene is set in a dimly lit room, with the warm glow of a lamp casting an orange hue over Edison's face. The air is thick with anticipation, as the inventor prepares to listen to the recording, which was sent via telegraph and then played back on the phonograph. The equipment surrounding him - the horn, the diaphragm, the cylinder - speaks to the complexity and ingenuity of the technology that made this moment possible. This photograph is a testament to the power of human curiosity and the relentless pursuit of knowledge. It is a snapshot of a pivotal moment in history, when the world became a little smaller and the potential for global communication was unlocked. Edison's focused expression and the intricate machinery that surrounds him serve as a reminder of the incredible advancements that can be achieved when we dare to dream and to innovate.
